Conquistador Ride Being Retired as Spain Heads Toward Record-Breaking 2026 Refresh
Conquistador, commonly known as Six Flags Over Texas’ swinging ship ride, has officially been retired. Conquistador was originally set to reopen in 2026 with the park’s record-breaking dive coaster expansion. Six Flags explored several options with contractors for Conquistador’s future life, but the ride’s age and condition ultimately determined its fate. Conquistador last operated on March 23, 2025 before surrounding construction projects blocked it off from the rest of the park. Additional information regarding the ride’s removal is expected to be announced during Six Flags Over Texas’ September 25 ride reveal event.
Earlier today, Six Flags Over Texas stated on social media, “We wanted to share an update with you. After exploring multiple options, we have decided that the Conquistador has officially sailed its last voyage. Thank you to all our guests and team members who have shared countless memories aboard this iconic ride. While it’s always hard to say goodbye, we’re excited about the epic opportunities ahead. We will continue to create new signature adventures for generations to come, beginning with the reimagining of our Spain area anchored by our record breaking dive coaster in 2026.”
In 1978, Spain’s star attraction, the Fiesta Train, was retired. This left the park’s Spain section without any substantial attractions beyond El Aserradero. 1979 saw El Sombrero, the park’s spinning hat ride, moved over to the area. Conquistador would make its Six Flags Over Texas debut for the 1981 season as Spain was in the process of undergoing major transformations. With its large presence and decorative fountains, Conquistador would become the center point of the area. Eventually, La Vibora would become its new backdrop. Conquistador was quickly a fan-favorite, appealing to several different levels of thrill seekers. One unique aspect of Conquistador was its rider interaction. Each of the ride’s ten rows faced towards the center of the swinging ship. Five rows on one end faced the five rows on the other end. Guests are in full view of their fellow rider’s screams of joy and terror. Conquistador stood the test of time, operating and thrilling guests for over 40 seasons.
Six Flags Over Texas hosts a major reveal event on Thursday, September 25, announcing details regarding their record-breaking dive coaster. Conquistador’s fate, along with the future of the land it sits on, is expected to be discussed during the reveal.
